On Wednesday 10th June a small band of merry men, Olga Sokolovskaya, Rod Hardy, Alan and myself (Helen Ruffle) took time out from our busy schedules to attend the Take a Break shoot at Guildford Archery Club.
It was cold and windy but we warmed up slightly after lovely hot bacon sandwiches were provided! The weather didn’t get much better throughout the day but we all persevered.
Alan and Rod shot well but had some stiff competition. Olga won the Ladies Barebow Windsor round and I won the Ladies Recurve Windsor round. I also shot my first ever 6 gold end even if it was only at 40yds!
Olga and I both received a beautiful chrysanthemum each – Alan received two kisses!
It may only be just past the end of May but our new RO Phil Embury is already exhausted with this lot! Well done everyone:

Eleanor Piper put in a knockout performance at the Evesham Spring Shoot last weekend. Shooting the International Cadet 60m 720 round she topped the table for the double round by almost 100 points.
Her first round score of 629 beat Bryony Pitman’s National Record from 2014 and she almost then repeated the feat with a 624 second round score. Great shooting Nell!
James Woodgate set out to Brighton Bowmen’s 1st Spring Tournament to shoot his 1st RS Double 60m Cadet Round with following H2H match. It was a lovely setting on a school playing field in Rottingdean with views to the sea behind the archers. The wind was a little tricky at times, nothing more than you’d expect being that close to the sea, but thankfully it was dry all day (although very cold if you were a spectator!).
Shooting above his age group, James shot really well and was rewarded with 556 in the morning followed by 544 in the afternoon. Not many cadet boys were there but they still ran the H2H and James won his first match, moving from up from 3rd to 2nd, and made a very strong challenge in the final taking his opponent to the very last set.
He’ll be going back there for more, hopefully in August!
This season Louisa was determined to have fun by making sure that she shot at all the great local Junior tournaments that we have on offer in the area. Her plan kicked off with a visit to “The Lintman” which, along with “The Little Acorn”, was one of the first tournaments she ever took part in. Non-RS, is it an excellent beginner’s tournament with “Colour Spot Prizes” i.e. circles in each of the coloured rings which align with chocolate prizes (none of which Louisa won) and a “Best Gold” and “Worst White” spot prize too (neither of which she won either).
Louisa was though fortunate enough to win Top Junior Lady with a SJ Western score of 832.
Please do put it on your calendar for next year and see if you can win more chocolate than Louisa – Andrew Seale did as well as winning the U16 Gents Western class!
Earlier in the month Louisa ventured a little further afield to compete in the Bowmen of Glen (Leicester) RS Rose Tournament on 10th May. Shooting 1228 on a Bristol 4 she claimed the Surrey County Record that has stood for 32 years!
And finally, at the Middlesex on BH Monday, she shot this 3 arrow end at 10m on her way to a Metric 4 Club Record of 1314!
Wisley will be composting on the following Tues 26th to Thursday 28th May
The field will be closed until 4.30pm on these days.
Well done to all the Woking Archers who took part in the Southern Counties Archery Meeting. Lovely weather on Wednesday, the opposite can be said for Thursday. Still great results with Surrey County Archery winning the team (made up of Richard Fitzgerald from Guildford Archery Club along with Mark, Paul and Roy from Woking), Woking winning the club team (Mark, Paul Roy and Candy), Matt Tuck taking 2nd place in the compound, Candy Schofield 2nd in the Ladies Recurve and Mark Preston 3rd in the gents Recurve.
This is a lovely, rather more relaxed shoot than most; everyone having a great time.

Just a quick reminder that we are hosting the Surrey training at the field on Saturday May 16th. Surrey will use the left hand end of the field and will need 7 targets.
At the right hand end of the field there will be a beginners course in the morning. Please therefore be aware that space may be restricted and it is likely that the whole field may need to shoot on one whistle for safety.
We appreciate your support in helping this training session run smoothly for the Surrey archers.
Please also note that the newly seeded area will be off limits until the end of May, making our range smaller than usual, but we will all benefit from the improvements to the field that took place over the winter months very soon. Thank you to everyone who helped make them happen.
