Surrey County Field Championships

On Sunday 2nd November, a few members of Woking Archers braved the horrendous weather to compete in the Surrey’s 30th Anniversary Field shoot at High Ashurst, near Dorking.

On arrival, we could smell the sausage, egg & bacon rolls being cooked and served with teas & coffees in the tent. Mark & Candy signed us in, told us our starting points and the bows & equipment were checked by a Judge.

This field shoot is run differently to ours, as we shot 1 arrow from one peg, then a second arrow from a peg closer to the target. Two archers could shoot at the same time, as two pegs were set side by side at the first distance, and then again two pegs at the nearer distance. There were all sorts of bow types being used, with & without sights.

We started at 9 o’clock, and it seemed to be turning into quite a nice day. How wrong we were. By target 3 the heavens opened!. It poured for the whole 3 hours. We were soaked to the skin!

After finishing the first 16 targets, we stopped for lunch. The caterers had provided a lovely hot Chilli con Carne, homemade burgers, sausages or bacon in rolls. With wet clothing being draped over car heaters, we tried to dry out as much as possible.

Round 2 started off dry & luckily for us, it stayed that way until the end. Apart from Candy doing a “beautiful swan dive” through the mud, cutting her knee open & being carted off to hospital for 10 stitches, we all had a great day. She even returned to finish off the scoring with Mark. What dedication. Well done Candy.
Woking Archers also managed to came away with a couple of medals.

Luke Mathews came 2nd in Barebow, and Alan Ruffle came 3rd in Longbow.

Thank you County of Surrey Archery Association for a well run shoot.

Latest classification and record update

The Indoor Season is definitely now upon us with achievements reflecting either the shorter outside rounds or indoor rounds. If you happen to be out and about shooting an indoor round Louise has asked if you could either email her your sheets or leave them in the folder in the kitchen as it’s still great to hear how you’re all doing!

Best in the Land

The AGB Senior National Rankings are out and Andrea Gales is confirmed as the Number One UK Ranked Compound Lady Archer – what an amazing achievement and a colossal well done from all your WAC supporters!

Jane Lawrence-Tuck was also ranked 23rd , putting her into the top third of all qualifying UK Lady Compound Archers, a huge congrats for a great season go to her too.

Not to be outdone, WAC’s very own Chris Mott also made the top third of all qualifying UK Gent Compound Archers.

For the Recurve camp, and out of a giant field of 171 qualifying archers (with Larry Godfrey sitting at the top of the pile), Chris Woodgate (still a junior) was ranked 65th, our Chairman Roy Watts 90th and Paul Jay was 105th.

A massive round of applause to every one of them!

Osterley Floodlit Western – Sat 11th Oct

If you ever fancy doing something a little different, we’d definitely recommend the Osterley Floodlit Western! Starting at 6pm, just as it’s getting dark, the floodlights soon come on and the round finishes around 10pm following an extended break at distance change for complementary soup and baguette. J With colour prizes at the longest distances it’s a great way to end the outdoor season.

Louisa won the “closest the gold” with this arrow, which was the last one she shot at 30yds!

Maintenance day

A reminder that we are having a maintenance day this coming Saturday from around 10.30am for most of the day, help at any time would be gratefully received.

We will be clearing shrubs alongside the ditches and making better bridges for our field shoots. We will also be putting in land drains to the left hand side of the field to help reduced the puddles. Bring your gloves, sensible footwear, secateurs, rakes shovels etc

If you are doing the improver’s session feel free to help after you have finished.

Bacon and sausage butties, soup, hot drinks and cakes will be available.

See you there!
