Classifications, Handicaps and Records

The outdoor season may be coming to a close but there’s absolutely no sign of flagging from our WAC archers. Particular attention should be drawn to the whopping score of 1404 shot by Andrea Gales – blimey!!
Also Eleanor Piper’s Bristol 3 County Record, which had stood intact for 30 years before she claimed it at the WAC Open; by comparison Louisa Piper’s Metric V National Record had stood for just 8 weeks (since she shot it at the SAW!).
Well done to everyone who has achieved their personal goals across the summer no matter how big or small – you’re all fantastic!

AGB Academies Cup

The AGB Academies Cup took place this weekend in Lilleshall which is the key domestic event in their Performance Pathway Calendar. Of the sixty plus Academy Athletes (all Recurve) that took part from the three regional English academies as well as Scottish and Welsh Academies, our three WAC archers all won medals!

Eleanor Piper won Gold medal in the U17 Girls and Chris Woodgate and Louisa Piper won Bronze medals in the U17 Boys and U13 Girls. Well done!!

Eleanor has also been selected to shoot in the AGB Academy Mixed Triplets Head to Head at the National Series in Nottingham next Saturday!

Woking’s best make the AGB National Series Finals!

The final of the Archery GB National Series takes place next weekend (30th / 31st August) at Wollaton Hall, Nottingham. Only eight archers in four categories (Ladies / Men, Compound / Recurve) nationwide have made it through the selection stages in Penicuik, Midlothian, Clophill, Bedfordshire and Exmouth and Woking Archery Club is proud and thrilled to have not one, but two, archers competing!

Andrea Gales and Jane Lawrence-Tuck will be competing on the Sunday in the Ladies Compound with the action starting at 10am and finishing around 4pm and the best news is that it’s absolutely free to go along and watch! As well as being able to support our own WAC archers there is food, entertainment, music and a drama about Robin Hood and well as mixed team demonstration matches by AGB Youth and Para archers.

So please consider going along to support Andrea and Jane and the best of Woking Archery luck to both of them! J

(More details are on the AGB website: http://www.archerygb.org/news/5500.php)

It’s not just about WAC achievements at a national level

achievements down at our own field are just as important and these are showing no signs of stopping any time soon!

2nd Leg Flag Shoot – Held on Sunday 10th August 2014

The Flag shoot is an Inter Club tournament between Farnham, Guildford, Alton & Four Marks and Woking Archery Clubs over 2 Legs per year. This year we went to Guildford on 18th May. This weekend was our turn to hold the second and final Leg of the year.

In torrential rain and wind, we managed to put up the BBQ under a gazebo and got some bacon rolls on the go. The Burco was boiling and we could all have a hot drink. It was touch and go whether to continue, but after the Reps from each club met at 10.30, it was decided to continue. With everyone from Woking helping out, the targets were set and the Target list re written. We started shooting later than planned, but the weather held…..for a while!

With the biggest, blackest clouds coming over halfway through the second distance, Harvey, our Field captain & Judge, stopped the shoot. Good call Harvey! We all managed to put our bows under cover before the heavens opened. After a quick cuppa, shooting resumed.

Suddenly, archers on the line, burst into laughter when Target 1 & 2 (the wheeled bosses) starting moving. The wind was so strong, it had pulled the anchor pegs out and the targets starting coming toward the shooting line. Very amuzing as Target 2 was the Judges!

At the end of the shoot, we provided afternoon tea, sandwiches and cakes, while the scores were being calculated.

On the day, Woking and Guildford came joint first with 5861 points each, with Farnham coming 3rd with 5823 points and Alton & Four Marks were 4th. The Overall score for both legs – 1st Guildford 11755 points, 2nd Woking 11557 points, 3rd Farnham 11438 points and 4th Alton & Four Marks 6022.

Great day had by all, but I must give huge Thanks to Harvey, Louise, Angus, Alan, Luke, Olga, Chris, Sue, Elaine, Pete & Brenda for all their help on the day. The day would have never come together without your help.

Thank You All.

Helen Ruffle
